The Department of Sociology is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in Computational Social Science to support the delivery of our new UG Social Science with Data Science programme. This is an exciting opportunity to join a research-active department and contribute to an innovative interdisciplinary degree which combines social inquiry with data analytics.
The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and delivering teaching in computational social science, social data science, quantitative methods and related areas.
You will play a key role supporting students to understand how data can be obtained, managed, analysed and presented to better understand social, economic and human processes in contemporary society.
Alongside teaching, you will be supported to pursue your own independent research and contribute to the wider research culture of Sociology at Warwick. You will also undertake appropriate administrative and collegial duties in support of the department.
This full-time post is available on a fixed-term basis for one year in the first instance. The department hopes that there may be potential for the role to continue beyond this period, subject to future funding and ongoing requirements.
You will have a strong academic background in Sociology, Computational Social Science, Social Data Science or a closely related field.
You will bring a clear interest in the relationship between social science and data science and the ability to teach quantitative computational or data-led methods to undergraduate students using Python and R.
You will be able to demonstrate a developing research profile and the potential to contribute to externally funded research activity.
You will be an enthusiastic and supportive teacher, able to communicate complex material clearly and engage students from a range of backgrounds.
You will also be well organised, collegial and willing to communicate to the wider life of the department through administration, student support and collaborative working.
The successful candidate will be someone who can help students understand not only how to work with data, but why data matters for understanding and explaining contemporary societies.
