Assistant Professor in Ottoman History (108204-1123)

The Department of History seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor in Ottoman History on a full-time and indefinite basis from 1 September 2024. 

You will be part of a one of the largest History departments in the UK with a thriving community of teachers and researchers covering a range of disciplines and geographical areas.

You will have expertise in Ottoman History, broadly construed as to include the territories in Asia, Europe and Africa that formed the Ottoman Empire from the mid-15th century to the early 20th century.

Although the chronological and thematic focus of the post is open, the ability to work with original sources in Ottoman Turkish, Arabic, Persian or other languages of the Ottoman Empire is essential. 

The History department has other academic staff researching and teaching in Middle Eastern, European and African History and applicants should indicate in their covering letter how their research expertise interfaces with existing research specialisms in the department.  We are particularly keen to see applications from backgrounds currently underrepresented in UK higher education.

In addition, you will be encouraged to propose your own modules depending on your expertise and research interests. 

You will also be expected to supervise final-year dissertations and contribute to MA teaching. 

You will undertake lecturing, seminar teaching, essay tutorials, office hours, marking of undergraduate work and monitoring of student attendance in accordance with the Department’s quality assurance practices.

You will also act as personal tutor to an assigned group of undergraduate students, providing pastoral support and guidance during the academic year. You will be actively engaged in research in Ottoman History or a related field.
